I do sort of agree with darklion in that this 'simple messages' thing is a little overrated. Beautiful, but overrated. EXCEPT...
Except when you use Brand New lyrics. I don't know, maybe I'm being biased and kind of hypocritical when I say that, but I think that, if you had used any other band's lyrics in this photo, it wouldn't be the same.
HOWEVER, you didn't use another band's lyrics. You used Brand New. And the stark harshness and simplicity of the photo, juxtaposed against the passion and pain of the words...I don't know. It's kind of really flawless.
Oh My, I really love this picture! its my favorite song from Brand New, they're just amazing and all their lyrics are so important to me, its just as if they knew you and your problems.... It's just an amazing way to capture a phrase from Degausser without hearing it nor just reading it but actually watching it. I know it's just simple, but for me that phrase is important and being able to "picture it" makes it art!
I am not a photog, but I just have to put my 2 cents in. This is really not all that great. I guess I don't understand this new craze of writing simple messages and the photographing it and calling it art. It's a filtered lens, possibly some noise in Photoshop, possibly a b&w lens, but I'm gonna guess PS again with a grey scale or at best a desatch treatment and bam, your work rockets to DA daily stardom.
I'm not mad or anything don't get be wrong, but I just don't understand where work like this is art. No, if you actually DID something with the images that maybe added some symbolism, or some subtle touches, or even just an interesting location and lighting scenario, then you would be making art with photography.
This kinda stuff? It's just...meh? what else ya got?
I really had no idea it was going to be so popular. I wasn't trying to make it a popular picture. And all I did to edit it was change it from colored to black and white. It was because of the lighting I used to take the picture, that's why it came out the way it did with it looking like there are different textures.
And that's okay that you don't see photographing lyrics as art.. I see it as art, and others do also.
well fair enough, but let's be clear here. I didn't say "I don't view photographing lyrics as art." What I take issue with is, there is nothing special. Art is supposed to look like something, evoke something. this? this is roughly the same as going to the lirics page for that song on google. Great, we have lirics, and? So that's what I mean when I say "what else ya got?"
Like, Ok, figure this, right? what is one of those strips of paper was doctored to look like a negative, so darker paper and witer text, easy to do in PS. say, oh. maybe the word "so" then instead of just being bland, we have a punch on that word and a focal point to your image.
Or what about this. What is the word love had a red, breaking heart in place of the "O" and that's the only thing.
see, what you have now has no thought and depth. I read nothing in this beyound "Hai Guys! I liek this liric, know eet?" it says nothing. Photoging lirics is cool, but just doing that and nothing further nothing deeper, nothing with a little more thought or effort? that's where I'm calling bull shit.
What I will say is I appreciate how well you took my crit. When I offer a negatifve crit like that, it is always a toss up on weather a person is going to be mature enough to allow the other person an oppinion, or if they are gonna start drama over it. You are in the mature catagory and I really appreciate that as it seems to be rare on this sight.
I appreciate that you took the time to give your opinion. I like opinions on my pictures whether it be positive or negative criticism.
i actually had thought about replacing the "O" with a heart/broken heart.. but I just opted to stick with just regular lettering. mainly because when i read this lyric, or espically hear it, it always hits me. i think the lyric in itself is artwork, so what better way to illuminate the artwork in it by just simply writing out the lyrics itself and nothing else.
and so as to not beat a dead horse and continue with this, thank you again for your opinion.
